Teams of community volunteers are now delivering Cycle Savers to Grade 5 children in all of the municipalities in Guyana thanks to support from the Guyana Municipal Governance and Management Program (MGMP), the Canadian Federation of Municipalities, and the Canadian International Development Agency.
As a country with very limited financial resources Guyana is challenged by serious problems with garbage, waste management and littering. At the worst, drainage trenches back up and cause flooding. Municipalities are working to change things for the better and Cycle Savers is an important environmental education initiative. Guyanese municipal development officers have visited Canada to learn about Cycle Savers and George Taylor from HRM and Dr. Alan Warner from Acadia University have visited Guyana to train leaders and support the program set-up. It is now off and running with lots of volunteers contributing their talents for the benefit of their communities and the environment.
